Intravenous cholangiography. Considerations on the diameter and emptying time of the choledochus in 187 cases subjected to surgical intervention of the bile ducts

Here 187 preoperative i.v. cholangiographies of patients submitted to surgery on the biliary tract are presented. Size of common bile ducts and density of dye are considered. The average diameter of the common bile ducts, considered normal at operation, was 6.19 .+-. 1.75 mm. The average diameter of the pathologic common bile ducts (44 cases) was 10.98 .+-. 5.12 mm. All the common bile ducts with a diameter of less than 6.75 mm were normal at surgery and those with a diameter greater than 11.45 mm had obstructions. Of the patients, 74 (39.57%), of whom 30 (40.54%) had obstructions, were included in the above-mentioned range. Of the 44 with common bile duct obstructions revealed at operation, 77.27% presented a density of dye greater than 120 min. The lack of precise value considered as the maximum limit of normality is stressed as well as the usefulness of the density of dye.
