A discussion is presented of debt-for-nature swaps, arrangements through which indebted developing countries exchange portions of their foreign debt for measures that protect the environment. It is argued that debt-for-nature swaps offer critical time that is needed to secure protection for tropical ecosystems, and they also promote the sustainable use of natural resources necessary for the economic development of Less Developed Countries.
