Physical illness and suicide

Of 276 cases of suicide in Singapore (1974), 70 (31%) were found to suffer from physical illness. Suicide cases suffering from physical illness could be categorized into 5 main groups according to the mental or physical distress caused. Fifty percent of the cases were above the age of 60. Among the different ethnic groups, the Malay was unrepresented. The physically ill who committed suicide used more positive and lethal methods of self-destruction.
