Histological study of eye malformations induced by cyclophosphamide in rat foetuses

Single injection (i.p.) of cyclophosphamide (20 mg/kg) to pregnant rats on day 14 of gestation (sperm positive day = day zero) induced eye anomalies. Malformed eyes thus induced in fetuses collected on day 20 were subjected to histological study which revealed thin and wavy cornea with marked thinness of substantia propria, displacement of lens loss of its shape and cytoarchitecture, large sized vitreous chamber and reduction in the thickness of retina with complete disorganization of its cytoarchitecture. There was no marked change in the ganglion cell layer of the retina.
