The design, construction, and use of an external canine thyroid gland monitor for either iodine metabolism studies or clinical diagnostic procedures are described. The detector unit was a sodium iodide crystal housed in a cylindrical lead shield. Distance between thyroid gland and crystal could be varied by moving the crystal vertically within the shield. The dog was restrained during the counting interval in an adjustable sling device. This unit, although simple in design, functioned consistently and accurately in a study of the effects of age and route of administration on 1-131 metabolism in the Beagle dog.
