A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the determinants of knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission among antenatal patients in Ibadan, Nigeria, during 1 June 2000-31 May 2001. A total of 1000 women (mean age was 29.5 years) were interviewed. Results revealed that knowledge of HIV transmission was positively correlated with educational status and negatively correlated with the number of wives in the marriage. It is suggested that high educational attainment improves knowledge of HIV transmission and reduces the chances of high-risk behaviours such as polygamy.
