The distribution of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity was established by studying 231 healthy subjects (67 males and 164 females) occupationally not exposed to Pb and the effect of Pb on the enzyme activity was examined usig findings from 22 Pb refining workers. The distribution of serum ADA activity in healthy subjects seemed to follow a logarithmic normal pattern in both men and women. The mean activity and the normal upper limit (95%) were estimated to be 10.0 and 14.0 IU/l in men and 10.4 and 17.5 IU/l in women, respectively, with no significant difference between the sexes or age groups. The serum ADA activity in Pb workers was 9.4 .+-. 5.0 IU/l. The difference in blood Pb level was significant betwen PB workers and controls, but none was found in the Hb level or the serum ADA activity. No significant correlation was found between blood Pb level and serum ADA activity with the coefficient of correlation being 0.140.
