Effect of rinsing with a 1.5% hydrogen peroxide solution (Peroxyl) on gingivitis and plaque in handicapped and nonhandicapped subjects

A total of 178 subjects rinsed under supervision, 3 times a day, for 7 days using either a 1.5% H2O2 rinse or a similarly formulated placebo rinse without H2O2. The subjects consisted of staff and patients of a nonresidental facility for the handicapped and were divided into staff treatment and control groups and patient treatment and control groups. Gingival index (GI), plaque, index (PlI) and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) measurements were taken before rinsing began and on the day following rinsing. There were statistically significant reductions in all 3 of the test parameters measured in the 2 treatment groups; conversely, none of the changes observed in the control groups were statistically significant. Initially, the staff exhibited better levels of oral health than the handicapped patients and enjoyed greater percentage reductions in GI, PlI and GCF scores following rinsing.
