Insight into breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices: a case study from Indonesia

The current practices regarding breast feeding and complementary feeding among 70% of Indonesia's rural population and among the urban poor population of 4 large cities in Indonesia, were examined. Data were collected between December 2001 and May 2002. Results revealed that more than 85% of infants received colostrum and 75-85% were breastfed for longer than 18 months. Only 27-42% of infants younger than 2 months were exclusively breastfed. During the first week of life, 50-75% of infants received other liquids. 22 and 52% of infants in the rural and urban areas, respectively, received formula milk during their first 7 days of life. Commercial instant baby foods were consumed by 20-35% of infants aged 1-3 months and by 45-70% of infants aged 4-5 months. These data enable the monitoring of infant feeding practices in rural and urban areas in Indonesia.
