Bundles of polyamide fibres with a diameter comparable to that of a human hair were used in studies in Czechoslovakia to test the susceptibility of Pediculus capitis Deg. to insecticides. No resistance to DDT was apparent in lice confined on fibres impregnated with this insecticide, even though the compound has been in use for 25 years; no cross resistance to permethrin was evident. The most toxic of the compounds tested was malathion (the LC50 for nymphs and adults was 0.000 008% after confinement on the impregnated fibres for 16 h); malathion was twice as toxic as pirimiphos-methyl, 104 times as toxic as trichlorfon, 1220 times as toxic as tetramethrin, 2.5 times as toxic as permethrin and 630 times as toxic as p,p'-DDT.
