AIDS housing fight continues despite '95 cutback battle victory

AIDS Action continues to work to save the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program, as well as to ensure that people with HIV/AIDS have access to other Federal housing programs. In June, the House VA/HUB Subcommittee will vote on recommendations for the FY 96 appropriations bill before it reaches the House. Although the subcommittee faces budget reductions and pressure to cut programs, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) pushed for a $64 million increase in HOPWA funding for FY 96. AIDS Action is advocating for congressional reauthorization of HOPWA as a separate program, and is hopeful that there will be enough congressional support.
