The incidence of enteropathogenic (epg) E. coli serotypes was determined in the urinary tract infections (uti), their properties being compared with epg strains isolated from cases of diarrhea. Among a total of 216 E. coli strains isolated from uti (bacteriuria (105), 13.9% was constituted by epg serotypes. Serotypes O25:K11,O86:K61, O128:K67, and O125:K70 constituted 65.9% of E. coli isolated from urine, and only 2.6% isolated from cases of diarrhea. And reversely, serotypes that made 64% in diarrheal diseases (O55:K59, O111:K58, and O119:K69) were isolated from urine in 6% of cases only. E. coli isolated from urine differed from strains isolated form diarrhea cases in capability of hemagglutination of human group A and guinea pig erythrocytes, more frequent production of hemolysin and colicins, and higher drug resistance. None of epg serotypes isolated from urine showed heat-stable enterotoxin production in tests on suckling mice.
