Mouse typhoid in normal & T-cell deficient animals

The T cell deficient animals, produced by thymectomy at 2-3 wk of age followed by treatment with antithymocyte serum, were highly susceptible to i.v. and oral primary infections with Salmonella typhimurium as determined by enhanced mortality rate and significantly higher viable bacterial counts in the spleen. The T cell deficient animals reconstituted with specific immune serum administered i.p. on alternate days tolerated S. typhimurium infection given by either i.v. or oral route quite well. T cell mediated immune responses (CMIR) are necessary for recovery of mice from a primary infection by S. typhimurium. Antibodies alone also bring about recovery from primary infections independent of CMIR if administered in adequate doses.
