The perinatal deaths that occurred from 1978-1981 [in Mexico] are grouped and analyzed according to the most important determining factor. It was considered better to avoid the term cause because of the difficulty of proving cause and effect, and should only refer to relationships, the aim being to facilitate the recognition of perinatal risk factors. The importance of hypoxia and prematurity, both more frequently associated with perinatal mortality are discussed, and possible methods of management and prevention are suggested.
