From different longitudinal dietary studies it is concluded that food intake pattern in New Zealand has changed significantly in the last 20 years compared with the first half of the century: energy intake has decreased but is still more than the recommended intake; amount of cereals has decreased but more fruit and vegetables have been eaten; the amount of foods containing a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids has increased; the quantity of meat containing a high proportion of saturated fatty acids, eggs and fish has not changed significantly. During the last 10 years there has been a reduction in the amount of total fat and sucrose eaten; beer intake has not changed. The amount of spirits taken has remained constant during the last 6 years, but wine intake has increased.
