Nitrofurantoin in the treatment of recurrent acute cystitis

A sample of 50 female patients with recurrent acute cystitis were studied and subsequently treated with nitrofurantoin, to evaluate its effectiveness and possible side effects. The isolated infecting organisms were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter, Streptococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. The best results were obtained in the group treated with nitrofurantoin associated to povidone-iodine, with good and fair results in 87.5% of the cases. In the group treated only with nitrofurantoin, the rate of successes was 80%. In the 1st group, a patient presented light and transitory epigastric pain and another one with vomiting and moderate epigastric pain. In the 2nd group no patients presented side effects.
