Hospital mortality of patients with recurrent myocardial infarction treated in a cardiological intensive care unit

Hospital mortality was analyzed in a group of 400 patients with a new episode of myocardial infarction treated in a cardiological intensive care unit. The control group comprised 400 patients with a 1st episode of myocardial infarction matched for age and calendar year of treatment. The mortality of the patients with a new episode of infarction was 2.3 times higher, on the average, than that of patients with the 1st episode, this increase was independent of age and sex. Mortality increased with the number of successive infarctions being 11.0% during the 1st infarction, 25.3% during the 2nd infarction and 31.2% during the 3rd episode.
