Computer-assisted tomographic X-ray examination was performed on selected skeletal muscles in 10 consecutive patients with suspected progressive muscular dystrophy. Identification of individual muscles was readily feasible in most cases. The computed tomographic pictures generally showed distinct pathological features, with fatty infiltration accumulating to seemingly total replacement of all muscular tissue as the most prominent finding. Computed tomographic scanning of skeletal muscles is a non-invasive technique which appears to offer a simple and reliable method for evaluation of the present state and progression of the disease in patients with muscular dystrophy.
