Cell generation cycle of spermatogonia in immature rats treated neonatally with oestrogen

Histomorphology of the testes alone with the cell cycle of B spermatogonia was carried out in 36-day-old rats treated neonatally with estradiol benzoate. Testicular atrophy with deficiency of pachytene spermatocytes, the most advanced germ cells in the experimental group, was a striking feature at this age. The body growth was not altered. No change was observed in the morphology and quantum of spermatogonia and pre-leptotene spermatocytes, though significant abnormality in the proliferative pattern of B spermatogonia was apparent. A significant number of these cells showed a hold-up in the G2-phase of the cell cycle. There was an average prolongation of G2-phase at the expense of G1-phase but the duration of S-phase and that of total cycle was not altered.
