Treatment of rotavirus infection in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri yunalis) with herbal Valeriana jatamansi (VJ)

Fecal suspension of rotavirus diarrheal children was fed to 24 tree shrews, all of which fell sick with the disease after 4 days, 16 animals that developed diarrhea within 48 hrs were randomly divided into 3 groups: (1) the Valeriana jatamansi (VJ) group, with 6 animals treated; (2) the oral rehydration salt solution (ORS) group, with 5 animals treated; (3) a positive control group of 5 animals; (4) additionally 6 normal animals comprised a negative control group. The results were: Group (1) no deaths, average recovery time 18 hrs with average body weight loss of 2.5 gm; gropu (2) 1 death, average recovery time 56 hrs with average body weight loss of 6.6 gm; group (3) 3 deaths, average recovery time 93 hrs with average body weight loss of 6.8 gm.
