The effect of a single 0.6 mg/kg i.v. dose of pirenzepine, a cholinergic muscarinic receptor blocker, on the GH response to 12 .mu.g/kg s.c. apomorphine was examined in 6 male subjects, to assess the part played by these receptor as mediators of the GH-stimulating action of apomorphine. The response was greatly reduced in 3 cases and completely abolished in 3, suggesting mediation by the muscarinic receptors. Since pirenzepine does not cross the blood-brain-barrier, it may be supposed that interaction between the dopaminergic and cholinergic pathways controlling the secretion of GH occurs in the median eminence and/or hypophysis.
