Breast self-examination: a call for scientific answers

Earlier detection and treatment of breast cancer appear to be the only means of curbing the death rate and controlling morbidity. The relative merits of breast self-examination, mammography and physical examination of the breast by a physician as detectors of early breast cancer are examined. Research has answered or is answering many questions regarding mammography and physical examination. The effectiveness of breast self-examination still needs to be determined.
