Giant cell (temporal) arteritis, one of the collagen diseases, is a generalized, inflammatory, obliterative disease affecting the major arteries of the elderly. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained or atypical cases of peripheral vascular diseases of elderly persons. In this article, the author reviews the systemic manifestations and clinical aspects of the disease as they may be manifested in the major arteries of the lower extremities.
