Better antiobesity drugs: coming--but when?

The limitations, cautions of using new thermogenic drugs and possible adverse physiological side-effects, in reducing fat stores and enhancing weight loss in obese subjects are discussed. Clinical results from animal experiments are described. While it is claimed that such drugs offer a way for reducing fat deposits of genetically-obese subjects without affecting lean body mass and that they should only be used with individuals with metabolic defects leading to obesity, it is felt that, even if a safe, highly-specific thermogenic drug becomes available, it will probably not be a miracle drug that permits food binges without weight gain.
