During a laboratory study in the USSR, inversions and reciprocal translocations were induced in a line of Anopheles atroparvus by treatment of males with X-rays. The 22 resulting aberrations were identified as 6 paracentric and 6 pericentric inversions and 10 reciprocal translocations (9 autosomal and 1 sex-linked). Partial sterility was demonstrated in the offspring of this line. The practical importance of creating lines with inversions and translocations for the genetic control of insect pests is discussed.
