Experiences with Chlortalidone treatment in benign essential hypertension cases

The antihypertensive effect of chlortalidone (Hygroton) was examined in 42 patients suffering from benign essential hypertension. Chlortalidone was administered in daily 100 mg doses. The blood pressure changes were measured in lysing and standing position after 4, 8 and 12 wk treatment. After 8 wk treatment significant fall of blood pressure values could be observed in response to the drug. Chlortalidone treatment moderated significantly also the acute blood pressure elevation induced by stress (cold pressor test, mental stress). Chlortalidone is highly effective in the treatment of hypertension.
