The cell composition and functional activity of alveolar macrophages found in bronchial secretion during bronchoscopy were studied in 22 patients with chronic bronchitis. Smokers have markedly increased amount of alveolar macrophages, with decreased functional activity in the obstructive and especially in purulent form of bronchitis.
