Cancellous bone screws for repair of proximal growth plate fractures of the tibia in foals

Proximal growth plate fractures of the tibia in 4 young foals were repaired surgically using cancellous bone screws. The fractures were all type II of Salter and Harris. In three cases the shaft of the screw crossed the growth plate without adverse effects. Placement of washers beneath the screwheads prevented migration of the screws into the metaphyseal bone and permitted retrieval. In all cases there was rapid and cosmetic healing of the fractures. All horses were sound 8 to 18 months after surgery.
