Bypass phrynoderma. Vitamin A deficiency associated with bowel-bypass surgery

A woman 41 years old had multiple keratotic papules and nodules on the trunk and extremities 4 years after a bowel-bypass procedure for morbid obesity. The microscopic features were those of a perforating folliculitis. Serum vitamin A values were extremely low. Treatment with vitamin A by mouth resulted in rapid improvement of the cutaneous lesions.
