Gas chromatographic determination of residues of bromopropylate and two of its degradation products in honey

Bromopropylate (BP) is the active ingredient of Folbex-VA, which is used in some countries for the diagnosis and treatment of Varroa infestations of honeybees. The procedure described is suitable for the determination in honey of BP, and of its main degradation product, 4,4'-dibromobenzophenone (BBP), and of a potential intermediate, 4,4'-dibromobenzilic acid (BBA). The method is sensitive to 0.02 mg BP or BBP/kg honey, and to 0.023 mg BBA/kg honey. Results are given for honey samples fortified with the compounds. In field samples of honey, taken soon after treatment of the colony with Folbex-VA, small amounts of BP and BBP were detected (values not given); BBA was not found.P. Walker.
