Presence of mesenchymal cells in the myotome region induces the onset of DNA synthesis in interkinetic nuclei of fully functional elements of the myotome of the X. laevis embryo. Mechanisms other than fusion of the myoblasts may thus be responsible for multinuclearity of the muscle fiber (at least in this species).
