Increased risk of tooth decay in children taking long-term medications containing sucrose or its parent sugars, fructose and glucose, is discussed. Clinical studies of sugar substitutes, which indicate that the polyols sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol and xylitol are the most desirable because they are the least acidic to tooth enamel, and that some may actually prevent caries, are described.
