Appendicitis and parasitosis. Analysis of 1,030 appendectomies

Clinical histories [1030] of patients being operated on because of acute appendicitis were studied. Specimens were analyzed for parasites. There was a total of 99 normal appendices, 25 of them with parasites; of 931 inflamed, gangrenous or perforated appendices, 15 had parasites. From a total of 391 acute appendicitis cases, only 5 were caused by parasites: 3 by Oxyuris, 1 by Ascaris that when remains trapped caused obstructive appendicitis and a gangrenous appendicitis of amoebic origin.
