Studies of the efficiency of .beta.-receptor blockers must take into account the behavioral-theoretical bases of the psycho-physical strain on the patients during stomatological interventions under local anesthesia. The relationship of central regulation and cardiovascular reactions in emotionally-induced behavioral disturbances was studied. The action of the cardioselective .beta.1-receptor blocker Cordanum on heart rate, blood pressure and subjective well-being was tested (in part by double-blind trials) on 179 volunteers subdivided into three series. The cardio-inhibitory effect of this drug is demonstrable by a significant decrease in heart rate and blood pressure. Behavioral disturbances may be avoided by the onset of anxiolysis. Application to stress-sensitive patients with increased heart rate and blood pressure regulation and to risk patients with ischemic heart disease may be possible.
