In this translation of a summary of a paper published in Population (September-October 1969), the results of a 1968 survey of 2300 married women by the French National Institute for Demographic Studies to determine 1) women's attitudes toward ideal age at marriage and childbearing practice, 2) motivations behind these attitudes, and 3) comparisons of attitudes with actual behavior, are presented. Women seem to have a more marked desire than previously for family planning. The family size judged to be most favorable to the economic and social success of parents and children does not correspond with the size judged most favorable to the moral and intellectual development of the child.
