Modified treatment plan to restore early swallowing in oesophageal cancer

A treatment plan is suggested for patients with a cancer of the middle-third of the esophagus selected for pre-operative radiation therapy followed by subtotal esophagectomy and colon interposition. According to this plan the usual waiting period between pre-operative radiation and esophagectomy is utilized for restoration of intestinal continuity by colon interposition. In 4 of the 5 cases treated on the plan suggested here, normal swallowing was restored within 21-25 days from the commencement of treatment. In comparison, the conventional guide procedure would take nearly 8-10 wk.
