In a double-blind crossover study on 12 obese hypercholesterolaemic patients the effect on blood lipids of eating 15 g guar gum granules daily for 3 months was evaluated. Serum total cholesterol decreased during guar gum intake in 8 of 10 patients. Mean serum cholesterol was 8.5 plus or minus (s.e. mean) 0.4 mmol/litre with guar gum and 8.9 plus or minus 0.3 with a placebo. Mean high density lipoprotein cholesterol or bodyweight did not change significantly. Guar gum did not alter 24-h urinary excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium.
