Value of endoscopic biopsy in the diagnosis of primary malignant lymphoma of the stomach: study of 29 cases

The diagnosis of malignant lymphoma of the stomach is rarely established before surgery. The present study analyzes the possibilities of making such a diagnosis on nonoperative gastric biopsies. Among 34 cases where the diagnosis had been made either initially or after a 2nd look with biopsies, malignant lymphoma was confirmed in 29. Eighteen of them were high grade malignant lymphoma; among the 5 other cases, the correct diagnosis was lymphoid hyperplasia in 2, undifferentiated carcinoma in 1, malignant melanoma in 1 and unclassified malignant tumor in another. Distinctive morphological criteria allowing the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma with gastric biopsies are reviewed. Diagnosis of gastric malignant lymphoma may be reliably made from gastric biopsies performed endoscopically.
