Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with bilharzial ureteric obstruction

A 45-year-old Nigerian man with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis was erroneously diagnosed as having amoebic liver abscess. Subsequent investigations revealed an obstructed pyonephrotic mass and the affected kidney was removed. Schistosoma haematobium ova and fibrosis were evident in the wall of the ureter.
