Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the rectum with ulceration

A case of heterotopic gastric epithelium in the rectum with local ulceration is reported in a 17-yr-old man. Sixteen other similar cases of heterotopia have been reported in the literature, including 3 with ulceration. This disease was found in both sexes usually at a young age; clinical signs were rectal bleeding or proctitis. The diagnosis was based on histological examination of rectal biopsies. It usually showed fundic tissue. This heterotopia is congenital. Ulcerations of the rectal mucous membrane associated with heterotopia are probably peptic in origin and seem to be unrelated to the solitary ulcer of the rectum. Treatment consists of resecting the lesions.
