Facial and vestibulocochlear nerve disease in six horses

In six horses presumptive otitis media-interna was associated with clinical signs of vestibular system ataxia and facial paralysis. The clinical signs implicated a lesion involving the facial and vestibulocochlear cranial nerves. Only one horse had signs of otitis externa. Five horses had radiographic changes primarily involving a periosteal bony proliferation of the stylohyoid bone and its articulation with the temporal bone. Five horses improved on antibiotic therapy.
