The dying elderly patient

The care of a dying elderly patient differs from that of a younger patient. The elderly are often less fearful of death, which results in less need for denial. Appropriate management requires an appreciation of the patient's view of his impending death and how it fits into a broader understanding of his life cycle. There are also specific fears that need to be addressed. Care must extend beyond specific treatment; the physician also must respond to the personal needs of the patient and the family.
