The WHO initiated a project on intersectoral action for health in 1981, the main purpose of which was to examine how national health strategies of developments outside would affect interrelationships making them more explicit and mobilizing them for achieving health goals. The book relates to the results of the research activities carried out during the first phase of the project in which five countries, India, Jamaica, Norway, Sri Lanka, Thailand, participated. The nature of the project was such that it was possible to gain initial insight into relevant problems by concentrating on a few case studies. In these, health situations were examined in populations at different levels of per caput income and at different stages of development. The book summarizes the main conclusions of the country studies and of analysis and discussion that took place at two consultations: one held in Colombo in September 1981, while the project was in progress, and the other in Trivandrum in November 1982, after completion of the first phase.
