Local inflammation was provoked in seven ponies by s/c implantation into the neck region of polyester sponge strips soaked in 2% galactan carrageenin. Three of the ponies received 4.4 mg/kg phenylbutazone i/v at the same time. Sponges were removed and exudates harvested six, 12 and 24 hours later. The experiment was repeated after three weeks with the previously untreated ponies receiving medication. Prostaglandin E2-like activity in the exudate was reduced for at least 24 hours by a single dose of phenylbutazone, but leukocyte migration was unaffected.
