Neutralizing antibodies against caprine herpesvirus were detected in 20.7% of 3167 goat serum samples from several parts of Switzerland. Infections were found only in the Tessin and Grisons cantons. In Tessin the prevalence was similar throughout the region, while in Grisons it ranged from 43.5% in Mesocco-Calanca to nil in Poschiavo. No seropositive animals were found in 37 serum samples from ibex in the Engadin/Bregaglia valley. Cross-neutralization of caprine herpesvirus occurred only with bovine herpesvirus type 1 (IBR IPV virus), but not with type 2. Latent caprine herpesvirus infection was reactivated by daily i/v injection with dexamethasone at 2.5 mg/kg body weight for 6 days, virus excretion lasting from 2 to 8 days after the start of treatment. An increase in antibody titre to caprine herpesvirus was found in one goat 17 days after the first injection. An ELISA test was developed and in tests on 195 serum samples gave good agreement with the results from neutralization tests.
