Cutaneous blastomycosis: an unusual complication of transtracheal aspiration

A case of cutaneous seeding of Blastomyces dermatitidis infection as an unusual complication of transtracheal aspiration to investigate a pulmonary infiltrate is reported in a 42-yr-old man. B. dermatitidis was seen in KOH preparations of sputum and was cultured following aspiration of a nodule which developed at the site of the transtracheal aspirate. The cutaneous lesion resolved after several weeks of therapy with amphotericin B; the infiltrate cleared after a total dose of 1.67 g amphotericin B.
