Concurrent i/m or i/v administration of therapeutic doses of chloramphenicol (CHPC) significantly prolonged the duration of pentobarbitone anaesthesia in dogs and cats. When CHPC was administered i/v to dogs immediately before the injection of pentobarbitone, the mean duration of anaesthesia in CHPC-treated dogs was 120% longer than in control dogs. When CHPC was administered i/v to cats 10 min. after the injection of pentobarbitone, the mean duration of anaesthesia in CHPC-treated cats was 260% longer than in control cats.
