Antigenicities of human myoglobin in various tissues and sera in various disorders, and of myoglobin in animals: results by radioimmunoassay system

The radioimmunoassy (RIA) of human skeletal muscle myoglobin (Mb) developed previously was used to measure the inhibition curves with antigen of Mb from various human tissues, such as skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, thyroid gland, thymus and fetal muscle, and of serum and urinary Mb in various diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myocardial infarction and malignant hyperthermia. All the inhibition curves were parallel with that of human skeletal muscle Mb, suggesting that these Mb had the same antigenicity. The antigenicities of animal Mb determined by RIA differed from that of human Mb. The differences were not necessarily correlated with the phylogenetic positions of the animals, but roughly corresponded with differences in the amino acid compositions of the Mb molecules.
