Early post-trauma depression of thyroxine, insulin and cortisol secretion yields poor prognosis, as do lower insulin/glucose (I/G) ratios. Cortisol administration is given those with low levels during shock for only a limited period in order to prevent side effects. In order to improve insulin and blood glucose intake in the early stage, GIK [glucose-insulin, potassium] therapy should be considered. Further study of thyroxine and its metabolic effects is needed.
