Effects of acclimatization to heat and cold on heart rate in chickens

Resting heart rates of chickens acclimatized to low, high, and intermediate (control) temperatures were significantly different, the highest and lowest rates occurring in the cold- and heat-adapted birds, respectively. The degree to which rates were influenced by sympathetic and vagal tone was determined by administration of the appropriate adrenergic (propranolol) and cholinergic (atropine) blocking agents.
